According to the Attorney General of Massachusetts, the Washington National Insurance Company data breach was reported after they were targeted in a recent cyber security attack. On November 29, 2023, the company learned that one of the company’s executives was targeted in a SIM-swapping attack which occurs when hackers transfer a victim’s phone number to their own device. The hacker was able to bypass security features that were in place, giving them access to Washington National data prompting the company to take steps to contain the incident and launch an investigation. It was confirmed that the hacker was able to access confidential information belonging to certain consumers. On January 26, 2024, Washington National Insurance Company sent out data breach letters to those individuals whose information was affected by the breach.
