Upon discovering the unauthorized access, the college took steps to contain the incident and reported it to federal law enforcement. They also launched an investigation with assistance from external cybersecurity experts. This investigation revealed that an unauthorized party had gained access to the college’s network between December 15, 2023, and January 24, 2024. During this extended period, the unauthorized party had access to files containing confidential consumer information.

Following their investigation, St. Joseph’s College of Maine conducted a comprehensive review of the compromised files to identify what information was exposed and which individuals were affected. This review process was completed on February 20, 2025.

While specific details about the types of compromised data have not been publicly disclosed in the filing with the California Attorney General, the college has sent personalized data breach notification letters to all affected individuals. These letters should provide victims with detailed information about what personal data of theirs was compromised in the breach.
