January 28 – The Mid Atlantic Retina data breach lawyers at Console & Associates, P.C are investigating the data breach that was reported after the company’s service provider, ConnectOnCall, experienced a cybersecurity incident. The Mid Atlantic Retina data breach resulted in unauthorized access to patients’ names, phone numbers, dates of birth, medical record numbers, and medical histories being compromised. The total number of affected individuals has not yet been disclosed.
According to ConnectOnCall’s filing with the California Attorney General’s office, the company detected a security incident affecting its computer systems on May 12, 2024. ConnectOnCall, which provides after-hours call handling services for healthcare providers including Mid Atlantic Retina, discovered that an unauthorized party had accessed their network between February 16, 2024 and May 12, 2024. During this nearly three-month period, the unauthorized party gained access to files containing confidential patient information from Mid Atlantic Retina.
After securing their systems and conducting an investigation with cybersecurity experts, ConnectOnCall determined that sensitive patient data had been exposed. The company has begun sending out data breach notifications to affected individuals, detailing the specific information that was compromised in each case.
Mid Atlantic Retina, also operating under the name WillsEye Physicians, is a specialized medical practice based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The organization maintains multiple locations throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, providing diagnostic and treatment services for retinal conditions and diseases. With approximately 354 employees, the practice generates an estimated $66 million in annual revenue. The data breach occurred through their service provider ConnectOnCall.com, LLC, a subsidiary of Phreesia that was acquired in October 2023. ConnectOnCall operates as a digital answering service provider, employing over 25 people with annual revenue of approximately $5 million, while its parent company Phreesia employs 1,438 people and generates $373 million in annual revenue.
