What Happened As A Result Of The Houston Housing Authority Data Breach?

According to the Texas Attorney General’s office, Houston Housing Authority reported a data breach after they were targeted in a recent ransomware attack.

The incident initially occurred on September 21, 2024, when hackers orchestrated a ransomware attack against the organization. Houston Housing Authority initially believed they had successfully contained the attack, but was later contacted by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which had detected ransomware on an HHA computer system.

The ransomware group responsible for the breach has claimed to have acquired approximately 38GB of data from Houston Housing Authority’s systems, including confidential consumer information.

While HHA first announced the breach in November 2024, they filed an updated notice with the Texas Attorney General on March 28, 2025, revealing more details about the incident and affected individuals.

As of this writing, it’s unclear whether Houston Housing Authority has begun sending out data breach notification letters to affected individuals, but these notices are expected to be distributed soon if they haven’t already been sent.
