Food for the Poor Data Breach Investigation

According to the Maine Attorney General’s website, Food for the Poor reported a data breach after they were targeted in a recent cyber security attack. The nonprofit organization detected suspicious activity within its computer network on September 6, 2024, which prompted an immediate investigation into the incident.

The investigation revealed that an unauthorized party had gained access to portions of the organization’s computer systems between September 2, 2024, and September 6, 2024. During this four-day period, the unauthorized party accessed files containing sensitive personal information of individuals associated with the organization.

Following the discovery, Food for the Poor conducted a comprehensive review of the compromised files to identify affected individuals and the specific types of information exposed. This review process was completed on March 7, 2025, confirming that highly sensitive personal data had been compromised.

On April 4, 2025, Food for the Poor sent out data breach letters to those individuals whose information was affected by the breach. These notification letters inform recipients of the specific categories of their personal information that may have been exposed during the incident.
